Extra Time vs Golden Goal.

There have been several suggestions to bring back the era of Golden Goal to replace the Extra Time rule. Both have their own advantage and disadvantages. But which one do i prefer?

Before i analyse them, I'll give a intro about what extra time and golden goal is all about.

In Knockout or Cup games, if the score is still tied after the normal time of 90 minutes, then the game would enter an extra time period which consists of 30 minutes divided into two halves. If the score is still tied, the game goes into penalties which will determine the winner of the game.

However, in the 1998 world cup and 2002 world cup, a method called Golden Goal was introduced. In the Golden Goal method, a fixed period of time is played after the regular 90 minutes and the first team to score in that extra period of time wins the game.

EXTRA TIME VS GOLDEN GOAL : MY CHOICE
Many would go with Extra Time but being an avid football fan, i prefer to go with the Golden Goal rule. Why do i say so? Ladies and Gentlemen, football in the current circumstances isn't beautiful anymore. Barcelona are the only team who play beautifully and dominate the world. The other teams today are all content with winning games by grinding out results no matter how bad they play. But i don;t blame them either. Today, its all about money. Win games and you shall survive with the best up there. Lose games and its downfall for you. A situation Liverpool fans will be very familiar with.

How do we bring back that excitement and element of Joga Bonito back into the game? It will be hard but i believe that this Golden Goal Rule serves that purpose. First off all, with the current Extra Time rule in place, knockout rounds in tournaments such as the UEFA Champions League can be really boring an awful. Some teams set up to defend in games and when they enter the extra time period, they defend and defend until its over and penalties comes up. Then there, the better team makes a mistake and the weaker team wins. This isn't something really nice to see for a football fan. One good example was the FIFA World Cup in South Africa last summer. Everything was perfectly carried out. No offence, but the quality of football was the only pathetic part of it. especially the Japan-Paraguay game where both teams set out with a defensive tactic and made it a dull grey game of football.

Football is a noble art. But how do maintain it with all these negative tactics taking over. There has to be a way to stop all these. That's when Golden Goal comes into the main picture. This Golden Goal rule will certainly inject that much needed pace and enthusiasm into the game. Extra times will be more anticipated and exciting as both teams will give their all to score a goal as they know that goal will bring them closer to glory. It will make the players more responsible and most importantly, it will eliminate some of the negative approached used by coached of certain team. THATS ALL. Only one solid, strong and valid reason for Golden Goal to be brought back.

Potential changes will be recommended by a FIFA-selected panel of experts called “Task Force Football 2014.”

The FIFA executive committee created this panel in October to help ensure a “more attractive” World Cup in Brazil after the disappointing quality of football in South Africa.

Then, Blatter was critical of teams' negative tactics which resulted in seven of 64 matches ending goalless, including six in the opening group phase.

In 16 knockout-phase matches, four were level after 90 minutes and went to extra time — including Spain's 1-0 victory over the Netherlands in the final.

Had the golden goal applied — which gives victory to the team scoring first in the additional 30 minutes — play would have stopped and Spain been declared winner as soon as Andres Iniesta struck in the 116th minute.

This is something i believe could make a real difference to the World of Football in years to come.

What if it's also goalless in the Golden Goal time given? Won't it be the same scenario if neither team opt to attack and prefer to defend? It will then go back to same penalty kicks....But then again either penalty kicks or golden goal gives us, the fans, the excitement which comes with suspense, adrenalin, fear, agony of defeat and the euphoria of victory for the team we support ...so who cares!!!!

Hmm. couldnt agree more with the first comment. If with the given time in the normal period you still cant score a goal (possibly no luck or whatsoever), what makes you think in the period of the Golden Goal either teams are able to score? Luck is also an important factor in any game. I personally believe, that if a team or a someone is out of luck for the day, no matter what you do, you are still helpless. Back to the penalties i guess??? Yes, precisely. Overall, in my opinion, there isnt any beauty in the Golden Goal rule like you suggested. Whatever happens in that day is one shall stand and one shall fall. No difference really. By the way, good topic. :)

Yeah. But when we compare both extra time and the golden goal rule, i believe that even you guys would agree that the Golden Goal brings more excitement as both teams would know that one mistake by them could cause them the game. It will add to the thrill of the game instead of the boring 30 minutes of extra time where teams are given chance to come back even if they concede a goal. In golden goal, its all first blood!....
